Back when I was a Youth Community Safety Liaison with the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team, a practicum student had shared that they had witnessed a young person walking in the cold, without adequate footwear to keep them warm. This sparked a conversation that ultimately led to the development of YEG Youth Connect. That first event was hosted in 2014 and after that first year I knew this was something that had to stand the test of time. To make that happen, I reached out to some folks in my network to see who would be interested in joining a steering committee. Everyone I connected with was very eager to join, and to this day, YEG Youth Connect is brought to life each year by passionate individuals from multiple youth-serving agencies in Edmonton.
The intention of the event has always been to reduce barriers, create connections and community, and have some fun along the way. Young people who are experiencing houselessness, or are on the verge of houselessness, have a unique set of barriers stacked up against them. YEG Youth Connect is an opportunity for them to connect with many supports and services, while also gaining access to clothing, haircuts, culture, entertainment, a warm meal, and so much more!
I’m thrilled to share that YEG Youth Connect celebrated it’s 10-year anniversary in 2023 and that they have added a mobile event in the late winter months, meeting young people where they’re at to ensure they are equipped with some of the essentials that they need. It has always been the goal to make sure the youth feel seen, heard, and valued!

It all begins with an idea.
Welcome to Youth Connect, where our mission is to empower and support youth, ages 13-29, who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. Our journey began as a humble annual, one-day event aimed at connecting young individuals with the resources they need to transform their lives. Over time, Youth Connect has evolved into a beacon of hope, hosting not only our flagship October event but also a March Mobile event introduced in March 2023, extending our reach and impact throughout the year.
Each October, we are honored to welcome over 30 service providers who generously offer their expertise and assistance to the youths we serve. It's heartening to witness the growing awareness among young people about the plethora of programs and services available to them through the diverse range of youth-serving agencies that participate in our events. From counseling and healthcare to education and employment opportunities, Youth Connect serves as a vital bridge between struggling youth and the support they need to thrive.
In October 2023, we joyously celebrated a significant milestone: the 10th anniversary of Youth Connect. Reflecting on our journey, we recognize the challenges of documenting the organization's history, particularly for those who haven't been part of it since its inception. Nonetheless, we pay homage to the visionary founders of Youth Connect, whose unwavering dedication and passion laid the groundwork for what we've become today. Their resilience in the face of adversity, especially during the unprecedented trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, is nothing short of commendable. Despite the obstacles, they pivoted seamlessly to online platforms, ensuring that our mission of continuity and support remained undeterred.
Undoubtedly, the pandemic presented formidable setbacks, leading to a temporary decline in engagement. However, in October 2022, we proudly relaunched our main in-person event, albeit with modest attendance. Yet, it was a testament to the enduring spirit of Youth Connect that despite the challenges, we saw growth in 2023, with attendance reaching 200 youths. This resurgence symbolizes not only our resilience but also our unwavering commitment to serving the community's youth, no matter the circumstances.
As Youth Connect regains momentum, we remain steadfast in our original purpose, rooted in the belief that every young person deserves a chance to thrive. With the continued support of our dedicated volunteers, partners, and community, we are poised to once again flourish and provide the vital support that our youth need to overcome adversity and build brighter futures.
